EDINA, MO -- Citizens’ of Knox County will be voting on a one-half of one percent county wide sales tax in the upcoming August 3rd election. If it passes, the tax would generate additional revenue of $85,000 to $100,000 for the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
“The purpose of this here is to keep on two full-time deputies” said Knox County Presiding Commissioner Pete Mayfield. “Otherwise after the first year we might have to lay one off.”
If the county wide tax did not pass, Knox County Sheriff Mike Kite would likely make some hard changes.
“Yes, worst case scenario, I would have to loose one deputy” said Kite. “And have vehicles that may not be as safe as they should be on the road.”
In addition to keeping two full time deputies, Kite said the money would go towards purchasing a new vehicle for his department.
“Currently we have three vehicles, two of which I have concern” said Kite. “One has 140,000 miles and the other has 170,000 miles. They break down often enough that it’s a burden on the department.”
