KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Missouri State Senator Wes Shoemyer was busy visiting half a dozen nutrition centers and food pantries in the heartland on Thursday. He was hauling close to 1,200 ears of sweet corn along with him. At each stop, Shoemyer donated 10 to 20 dozen ears grown from his own land.
“It’s a way to get out and visit with the constituents” said Shoemyer. “Produce, where I come from in the country, it’s the way you get to know folks. You take some of the bounty what you have and you share with that. It’s really enjoyable because folks enjoy fresh sweet corn and it’s a good time to interact with constituents.”
Shoemyer lives in Clarence where he helps farm a little over 2,000 acres of land with his father, brother-in-law, and son. They grow corn, beans, wheat, red clover, grains, hay, and also manage some cattle.
“It takes three days to get to all of the nutrition centers in our district so we’ll be doing this for three days for the 13 counties in northeast Missouri” said Shoemyer. “We get a little bit of road time, a lot of visit time, and it’s just a really good time.”
Besides Kirksville, Shoemyer visited Unionville, Lancaster, Memphis, and Kahoka on Thursday. On Friday, his tour continues, stopping in Shelbina, Monroe City, Palmyra, Hannibal, and Perry.
