NOVINGER, MO --

The flood situation in Novinger is looking grim.

The Chariton River was over 26 feet Tuesday afternoon. Flood stage in Novinger is 20 feet. The National Weather Service forecasts that the river will be rising to 30 feet or so by Wednesday night.

County officials are taking action to prepare for more floods.

“I'll make contact with some of those residents in the area, let them know the possibility of flooding in that area so they need to keep that in mind and take precautions and preparations in case they need to leave their residence,” said Adair County Sheriff Bob Hardwick.

Authorities responded to several incidents of cars stalled in water within the Kirksville city limits Monday night.

Several highways in the county were flooded, with water in places that don't normally flood. Hardwick reminds motorists not to drive through water covered roadways.
