KIRKSVILLE, MO --

Fire broke out in a field south of Kirksville early Saturday afternoon at Highway 6 East and Highway F.

According to a local fire chief, 11 acres of a bean field owned by Larry Newman were burned.

It took firefighters about an hour to contain the blaze.

The field had just been sprayed in preparation for bean planting. The fire was most likely caused by fireworks or a burning cigarette.

The Eastern Adair County and Novinger Northern fire departments were called to the scene.
