OTTUMWA, IOWA -- While the post office, banks, and government offices will be closed Monday to honor the Fourth of July, our Fact Finder Team a program feeding hundreds of heartland citizens will also be closed Monday.
The Salvation Army, just as many businesses across the country are doing, is giving its employees the day off.
Besides cooking lunches, the Salvation Army in Ottumwa provides the Meals on Wheels program to more than 150 heartland residents. But, an off day does not mean they have been forgotten this holiday weekend.
“Many of them have family or friends that will come visit them and take them out to a restaurant or go and barbeque somewhere. But there are those who don’t have any friends and family in town or they can’t make it to see them so those are the ones we really want to watch out for,” said Captain Chris Ferguson.
Ferguson said they prepared frozen meals for Monday, much like a TV dinner.
He said more than a quarter of those on the program requested the meals.
