KIRKSVILLE, MO --
Yet another Missouri crop is taking a hit this year.
Experts say this year's wheat harvest could be near a record low. The expected yield is projected to be 58 percent below last year's harvest, and 74 percent below the 2008 crop.
“We didn't have a lot of wheat planted last fall because of wet weather, the wet fall. We're battling just trying to get everything out last fall and what wheat we planted, if it went in late it really looked poor,” said Research Agronomist Kelly Nelson.
Nelson told our Fact Finder Team the wet weather is to blame for the crop loss. The rainy conditions in June infested the wheat with diseases. He says the early planted wheat on the research farm looked the best.
