BLAKESBURG, IOWA -- Last week KTVO talked with a local farmer whose crops were drowning with the seemingly endless storms.
On Friday, our Fact Finder Team went back to see how his situation has changed after another weeks worth of storms.
“Well, it has deteriorated every day for the last over two weeks now. It is getting to a critical stage. We are rigging up to drop some more liquid nitrogen on it. We will see if that will salvage it,” said farmer Bruce Klyn.
Not only is standing water killing his crops, it has also kept him out of the fields.
“We need about two weeks of dry days just to get things back to normal and get our work done. That’s the other problem. We can’t get the liquid nitrogen on until the field gets dry enough to get over it,” Klyn said.

Klyn said the roots are currently on top of the soil as opposed to going down. While this is an issue normally, he said it might also help save the plants. If they can apply the nitrogen directly to the roots, Klyn says the plants might be saved and turn green again in as little as three days.
“We’re to the point where we got to be careful we don’t send good money after bad (crops) because we might not be able to salvage it. The corn that looks halfway decent we are going to go ahead and put some more nitrogen on it because we figured we have lost it and see what happens from there. If it continues to rain we’re just pouring money down the drain,” Klyn said.
