It is a tradition that is continuing for a 146th Season.
OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Ottumwa Municipal Band is holding its "Summer Concert Series" in Central Park every Thursday at 7 PM.
KTVO spoke with Greg Hendrickson, a tuba player in the band and also a Band Instrument Repair Technician for West Music. He discussed the name of the concert for Thursday, June 24th.
"It's 'Out Of This World,' and it will feature music about outer space...you might hear familiar tunes from Star Wars, Star Trek, other movies. And it will just be a neat theme for us; something different. A great concert...come out and enjoy the park," Hendrickson said.
Another song will be the Frank Sinatra classic, "Fly Me to the Moon."
"A great opportunity for us musicians to gather in the park on a nice summer night. Whatever the music is, we enjoy playing and it's also fun to see the audience out enjoying what we have to offer," Hendrickson said.
He discussed some history behind the series.
"In the previous 145 seasons, the band is fortunate to have only had three conductors that have made up 114 of those years. So the conductors have stuck around and contributed significantly to the band going back to 1865," Hendrickson said.
Attendees are reminded to bring a lawn chair with them to Central Park.
