KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- When you read your next electric bill, don’t be surprised if it’s higher than your last.  AmerenUE customers will see a rate increase between 9.9% and 12%.  The average customer will see a 10% increase or nine dollars a month.

The increase request was filed last July and took 11 months to process.  But it could be worse.  Ameren requested a $400 million increase but the Missouri Public Service Commission approved $226 million.

“Our goals are to provide as reliable of service as we can, as safely as possible, and as affordable.  And so we take information that we present to the public service commission and then they have 11 months to consider that,” said AmerenUE Spokeswoman Annette Sweet.

Ameren says despite the increase, their rates are more than 30% below the national average.  That increase went into affect Monday.

Ameren is also revealing a new tool for customers to access online.  Daily reads allows you to see your daily energy usage for up to seven days.  The new tool is part of the Energy Savings Toolkit.

Ameren officials say they hope this will help customers make better decisions when it comes to their electricity usage.

“Because it's a little hard to control something when you don't know what's happening yesterday or today where with this you get some immediate feedback and you can see how can you make a difference on your electric bill,” said AmerenUE Spokeswoman Annette Sweet.
