KIRKSVILLE, MO -- The City of Kirksville took the first step toward getting money to make necessary improvements to the city wastewater treatment facility, during a meeting with Adair County Commissioners on Monday. Adair County officially assigned Reinvestment and Recovery Act bonds to Kirksville totaling over $2.2 million for the waste water treatment center upgrades.
The money comes from federal money that the commissioners applied for, but ended up not needing.
"We didn't know exactly if we we're going to get it. Anytime there's something that comes up, we have the opportunity to apply for it we try to do it in case we have a need for it. And the city has this need so we're just going to transfer it to the city and they'll be responsible," said Adair County Presiding Commissioner Gary Jones.
Kirksville City Council will take action to accept the bond assignment Monday night at their regular meeting. If the council approves, Presiding Commissioner Jones will sign final documents Tuesday. That’s also when bonds will be for sale.
Adair County roads will see some improvement. Road rock will soon be delivered throughout the county. Free cart rock will be placed on roads north of highway 6 and the county is offering residents a continuing program that the presiding commissioner says is getting a lot of interest.
"If they buy three-fourths of it, we pay a fourth of it for inch and a half rock and then we haul it for nothing and spread it. And that's helping the roads a lot too," Jones said.
Jones said they've also been able to complete upgrades to a bridge using grant funding.
