FLAGSTAFF (AP) -- The strong winds that fueled a fast-spreading wildfire near Flagstaff, Ariz., are expected to continue today.

Hundreds of residents were asked to evacuate Sunday when flames came within 500 yards of their homes. No buildings burned.

Some 300 firefighters worked through the night using helicopters and air tankers that dropped fire suppression chemicals. A federal management team is taking over direction of the effort today, which will mean more firefighting resources available.

This is the second serious wildfire in the area in days.

Evacuation orders for a wildfire that erupted Saturday in the southeastern end of town were lifted after officials declared the blaze 25 percent contained. A California man is accused of starting the fire when he left behind hot coals at a campsite.
