KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Adair County Drug Coalition, area law enforcement agencies, and several healthcare organizations hosted a new event aimed at keeping your family safe this weekend.
Adair County residents had the opportunity to drop off any unused or expired prescription or over-the-counter medications as part of the county's first-ever Prescription Take Back Day. Law enforcement officers set up a drop-off area at the Kirksville Walgreens for several hours Saturday, so residents could drive up to get rid of their medications.
“The main purpose though is to get them out of people's houses where young children, the elderly and teens may on purpose or accidentally take these medications and can become very ill from taking other people's prescriptions,” said Adair County Drug Coalition President Kathy Rohn.
She says all the medications collected today will be incinerated, so there's no chance the drugs will end up in a landfill, and eventually in our water supply. Organizers say they hope to make Prescription Take Back Day a regular event in the community.
