DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The state's top election official says nearly 300,000 voters cast ballots in this week's primary election, and the overwhelming majority voted in Republican contests.
Secretary of State Michael Mauro announced Friday that 299,409 people cast ballots in the primary. Of that, 227,347 voted in
Republican primaries and 72,062 voted in Democratic primaries. A big reason for the disparity appeared to be the competitive
Republican primary for governor, won by former Gov. Terry Branstad.
The highest-profile statewide Democratic race was for the party's U.S. Senate nomination. Des Moines lawyer Roxanne Colin won that with nearly 80 percent of the vote
