JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Many Missouri insurance companies already are implementing a new federal law allowing adult children to remain on their parents' health insurance.
The new law requires insurance plans that offer dependent coverage to apply to children up to age 26 - even if they are married, no longer students or no longer claimed as dependents on their parents' tax returns. The federal law takes effect Sept. 23.

Missouri's insurance department says at least seven insurance companies have agreed to implement the change sooner. Those companies hold about two-thirds of the insurance policies regulated by the state.
Missouri law allows children to remain on their parents' policies until age 25. But a department spokesman says the state law has stricter qualification requirements.
