OTTUMWA, IOWA -- In preparation of Iowa’s June, 8 primary, KTVO is talking with candidates in some races across the heartland.

One of the races KTVO is looking at is the Republican U.S. Republican seat in District 2.

Rob Gettemy, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Steven R. Rathje and Christopher Reed are the four republican candidates looking to challenge incumbent Dave Loebsack.

Today’s candidate is Rob Gettemy of Marion, Iowa.

Regarding the role of the federal government:

Gettemy said he feels the federal government needs to do less and leave local and state issues up to those governments.

“Look at the federal government involved in education. It’s been a disaster. It’s been going on for nearly 40 years and ever since the federal government has gotten involved the costs have skyrocketed and the quality has gone down. The federal government is not the answer to local problems.”

Regarding government spending and balancing the budget:

Gettemy our current Congress is spending too freely and fears what is happening in Greece might be in our future if things don’t change.

“Money does not solve the problem. What we need are folks who are willing to make the difficult decision and again you may want all these things, but at some point we run out of money and we’re at that point. Again, what’s going on in Greece is exactly what’s going to happen to the United States if we don’t get this under control.”

Regarding bringing government projects and development to southeast Iowa:

Gettemy will not promise every project and desire fulfilled, but he said he will bring projects and fiscal responsibility.

“We have to understand that there may be needs all over the country, there are needs all over the country, but fundamentally we simply cannot fund them all. We just don’t have the money. It would be great to say I would like to give you this and this and this, and unfortunately politicians have done that for years and years.”

KTVO continue introducing you to primary candidates for the Republican race for Iowa’s US Representative District 2 seat.
