BURLINGTON, IOWA (AP) -- Authorities say a boy died after he apparently fell into the Mississippi River in Burlington.

Firefighters were called to a boat dock along the river about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Battalion Fire Chief Matt Trexel says witnesses reported seeing the boy fall into the river. He struggled to keep his head above water, then went under.

The boy's name and age were not immediately released.

Trexel says firefighters used poles to probe the river, then pulled the boy out of the water about 20 minutes later.

Fire Chief Thomas Clements on Monday referred additional questions to the Burlington police department. A telephone call to police was not immediately returned.
