FAIRFIELD, IOWA -- In preparation of Iowa’s June, 8 primary, KTVO is talking with candidates in some races across the heartland.
One of the races KTVO is looking at is the Republican State Senate seat in District 45. The incumbent is Sen. Becky Schmitz (D), Fairfield.
The three Republican Candidates looking to challenge Schmitz are Randy Besick, Sandy Greiner, and Rick Marlar.
Today’s candidate is Sandy Greiner of Keota.
Regarding the role of state government:
Greiner believes what ordinary people can do the government should not need to regulate. She included law enforcement, roads and upper level education.
“We also have an obligation to look out for our disabled, for our veterans, for children that have been abused. There has to be some supervision there, but not things that ordinary citizens could and should be doing for ourselves,” Greiner said.
Regarding government spending and balancing the budget:
Greiner feels we need to step back on look at how we set the budget first.
“I think one of the things that needs to be seriously looked at is the way that the state is currently budgeting. We have a 99% spending limitation meaning we can only spend 99% of the projected revenue. That projection is made by the revenue estimating conference,” Greiner said.
Regarding Taxes:
“I think it is important to understand that when you cut taxes that puts more money into people’s pockets and they go out and spend it which generates more sales tax. So in fact, if we cut taxes, we could very easily have an increase in revenue,” Greiner said.
Regarding gay marriage:
Greiner opposes gay marriage. She said she would support amending the constitution to ban it.
On Friday, KTVO will introduce you to Rick Marlar, the final candidate in this race, as well as introduce you to the race for Iowa’s US Representative District 2 seat.
