IOWA CITY, IOWA (AP) -- Opponents of Iowa City's new law raising the minimum age to be in a bar at night to 21 are making good on a promise to put the issue to the voters.
Organizers of a petition drive delivered about 3,300 signatures to City Hall on Tuesday. They needed to collect 2,500 signatures from eligible voters to force the city council to act on their proposal.
City staff will verify the signatures. Once certified, they will be sent to the council. The council will have until Aug. 25 to decide whether it wishes to repeal the new law or put the issue before voters in a special election or on the November ballot.
The proposed referendum would seek to let 19- and 20-year-olds in bars after 10 p.m., as has been allowed. The new 21-only law takes effect June 1.
