BROOKFIELD, MO -- Graduating seniors at Brookfield High School received a memento from the community on Wednesday. Representatives of the Brookfield Area Growth Partnership presented the class of 2010 with a personalized mailbox. While other rural towns around the country are in danger of shrinking as their youth move away to find opportunities elsewhere, Brookfield is sending a strong reminder to come back and give back to their hometown.
"I’m very blessed to have grown up here” said graduating senior Hilary Stuver. “It’s very special today, we come and they hand mailboxes out to everyone and just invite us back. Growing up here is just something unique and special and I love it."
The mailboxes act as a message to the youth, saying they will always have a home in Brookfield no matter where their lives take them.
“I think the programs really cool” said Stuver. “They want us to one day put them up at our homes in Brookfield.”
The Brookfield Area Growth Partnership has been sponsoring the event for four years. This year, nearby Marceline High School also adopted the program hoping to reach their youth.
