JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- The Missouri State Parks system has launched a new website allowing potential visitors to more easily see whether public beaches are open or closed.
The new website comes after revelations that the Department of Natural Resources has previously failed to close some beaches with high levels of E. coli bacteria - and failed to tell the public about the tests in a timely manner.
The department's parks division oversees 20 public beaches around the state. Beaches are closed if a single E. coli example exceeds a certain threshold, or if a 30-day average of several tests exceeds a different threshold.
