OTTUMWA, IOWA -- Mother’s Day serves as Black Friday in the flower industry.

Mother’s Day is the biggest flower selling holiday of the year according to Hanz Wilz of Edd the Florist in Ottumwa.

Wilz said the rush lasts all week and brings in customers of every age group, but they all have one goal, “To make Mom happy.”

“It affects our business in that for the entire week we can send flowers out. It’s probably the single largest, like I said, the single most amount of flowers go out of our store. We had 60,000 stems of flowers in a refrigerated truck (at the start of the week),” Wilz said.

Wilz said the semi now sits empty.

He said in a normal week they will make 100-200 deliveries, however they made well over 1,000 deliveries this past week, including 837 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
