DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowans are in for a chilly weekend as a cold front brings falling temperatures and a chance of frost.

The National Weather Service says overnight lows will dip into the 30s across much of the state on Saturday and again on Sunday. Gardeners may have to cover just-budding flowers and plants to avoid damage.

Highs this weekend will be only in the 50s to low 60s.

Early Friday, thunderstorms moved across southern and central Iowa. Winds were expected to pick up during the afternoon and continue Friday night. Light rain will linger over northeast Iowa. Snow is possible over Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Light rain returns to the forecast on Sunday, with another round showers and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday.
