DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- It's a nervous time for Democrats who hold statewide offices as they face an anti-incumbent movement coupled with a lack of campaign cash to get their message out to voters.

State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald is seeking his eighth term and acknowledges this is the toughest election since his first campaign.

Like Attorney General Tom Miller and Secretary of State Michael Mauro, Fitzgerald says he faces a difficult situation because most voters know little about him. Unlike governor or U.S. senator, the duties of other statewide positions are relatively obscure but officials don't have the money to conduct large-scale ad campaigns.

Opponents seem to see an opening, as office holders who didn't have opposition last time will face Republican candidates this November.
