One Heartland resident is taking on the issue of homelessness by hitting the road.
NEAR CENTERVILLE, IOWA -- 26-year-old Steve Bunch of Lovilia, Iowa is taking a solo run across the Hawkeye State...a 262-mile trip over the course of seven days.
He began in Nebraska City on the Iowa border, running along Highway 2, and he will end in Fort Madison on Friday. His family is traveling with him in an RV.
This young graduate of Iowa State and Kansas State studied Central Asia in college and wanted to make a difference.
Nine months ago, he decided to take this run for Habitat for Humanity International, particularly for the people of Tajikistan, an impoverished country to the north of Afghanistan. And he expressed his thanks to all those who have donated and continue to support his efforts.
"They are in desperate need of solid housing and affordable housing. So the goal is to run this and raise some money for them. And thanks to generous donors we're getting close to reaching our goal of $10,000," Bunch said.
Bunch has raised $7,000 so far.
For those inspired to take the same run, he has this advice...
"Having a good support system is essential. And fortunately I'm blest with a great family who follows me along the way. And I couldn't even begin to think about doing something like this without their help," Bunch said.
He attended an event at Davis County High School on Wednesday evening, and on Thursday he will leave Bloomfield on Highway 2, en route to Fort Madison.
