KIRKSVILLE, MISSOURI -- Press release from Kirksville Police Department
**SCAM ALERT** There have been numerous reports of Craigslist Scams... do not become a victim, follow these rules...
The Kirksville Police Department has received numerous reports of fraud and scams on Craigslist. Craigslist is a webpage where individuals can list items for sale or rent, similar to that of a classifieds ad.
Several reports have been made of houses being listed for rent that are not actually for rent. The fraudulent listing will request you send a deposit or money to a foreign location. They often use pictures from a real estate website that list a house for sale. Do not fall for this scam.
Other scams exist as well on Craigslist. If you see a fraudulent listing you are urged to report it to Craigslist to have it removed.
Safety Tips according to Craigslist:
DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one simple rule and you will avoid 99% of the scam attempts on craigslist.
NEVER WIRE FUNDS VIA WESTERN UNION, MONEYGRAM or any other wire service - anyone who asks you to do so is a scammer.
FAKE CASHIER CHECKS & MONEY ORDERS ARE COMMON, and BANKS WILL CASH THEM AND THEN HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE when the fake is discovered weeks later.
CRAIGSLIST IS NOT INVOLVED IN ANY TRANSACTION, and does not handle payments, guarantee transactions, provide escrow services, or offer "buyer protection"
or "seller certification"
NEVER GIVE OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION (bank account number, social security number, eBay/PayPal info, etc.) AVOID DEALS INVOLVING SHIPPING OR ESCROW SERVICES and know that ONLY A SCAMMER WILL "GUARANTEE" YOUR TRANSACTION.
