KIRKSVILLE, MO --

The school year is winding down, and 11 teachers and staff members in the Kirksville school district are hanging up their hats.

Monday night the Kirksville Community Teachers’ Association held its staff recognition dinner to pay tribute to this year's retirees.

Longtime faculty were also recognized for their years of service.

High school secretary Lori King received the "Support Staff of the Year" award.

The honor of "Teacher of the Year" went to Mariann Gibson, a seventh grade Special Education Teacher. Gibson says she is humbled and appreciative that her co-workers acknowledge her teaching abilities.

“I was 30 when I got my degree so this was kind of a career second path for me and when I did accept the job here in Kirksville I didn't think it was anything I was ever going to stick with but I've been at the middle school ever since and I love it,” Gibson said.

Gibson has been teaching in the Kirksville schools for 14 years.
