CLARK COUNTY, MO. -- Imagine being accidentally shot while turkey hunting and then your ambulance crashes on the way to the hospital.
That's exactly what happened to a St. Louis area man who was hunting Thursday morning in Clark County.
He was shot around 8:20 a.m.
Conservation Department spokesman Randy Doman said Bobby Johnson, 54, of Eureka, Missouri was sitting 20 yards away from a strutting tom turkey decoy that he had placed in the Fox Valley Conservation Area west of Kahoka.
Doman told KTVO another hunter, Richard Meier, 66, of Pawnee, Illinois, thought the decoy was a real turkey.
He spotted the decoy from a distance, snuck a little closer to it and fired one shot at it.
At least three pellets from his shotgun hit Johnson in the face and upper torso as he sat at the base of a tree.
A Scotland County Hospital ambulance transported Johnson to Columbia where it was involved in a collision with a car.
The crash happened not far from University Hospital where Johnson was being taken.
The Columbia Missourian reports the ambulance was traveling with lights and sirens on when it collided with a car at an intersection.
The impact sent the emergency vehicle off the road and down a small embankment.
No one in the ambulance was hurt in the crash.
Johnson was picked up by a Columbia ambulance and transported the rest of the way to the hospital.
As of Thursday night, Johnson was listed in “fair” condition.
The driver of the car involved had minor injuries.
The shooting remains under investigation by the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Clark County Sheriff's Office.
