KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- The Kirksville City Council is declared May will be Historic Preservation Month. The Kirksville Historic Preservation Commission is only a year old and they want more people to be aware of the historic places in Kirksville. There are eight Kirksville locations on the National Register of Historic Places. Those include the Masonic Temple, the Adair County Courthouse, the Courthouse Square Historic District, the Grim Building, Travelers Hotel, Dr. E Sanborn Smith House, Captain Thomas Harris House, and the Trinity Episcopal Church.
The commission is conducting two surveys to find out if there are more locations that could make it on the list.
“I think we have many more that would qualify if we can get ‘em on the list. We want to recognize more properties in the city, maybe not to put on the national register but they’re historic,” said Kirksville Historic Preservation Commission Staff Representative Brad Selby, “We want to get that information out there for people who are spending time in the city this is an activity. You get the brochure, you drive around, it’s got a little map on it and you can look at these places and they’re interesting and it gives a little bit of history.”
Selby says most of the homes are from the post-Civil War era. He encourages residents to visit the two museums in Kirksville to learn more about the historic places.
