COLUMBIA, MISSOURI -- The Missouri FFA Association recognized Charles Newland, of the Kirksville FFA Chapter, as Area 3 Star in Agribusiness and received the second-place Agricultural Sales Entrepreneurship Proficiency Award at the 82ndMissouri FFA Convention. His parents are BJ and Cheyrl Newland of Kirksville, Mo. His advisors are Burnie Schneiderheinze and Jason Dimmitt.

Area Stars in Agribusiness are selected based upon outstanding achievement in work experience in an agricultural business as part of a student’s Supervised Agricultural Experience Program and active participation in FFA. Area 3 covers 22 chapters in the Northeast District.

MFA Inc., Columbia, sponsors the 16 Area Star in Agribusiness Awards.

Proficiency awards recognize FFA members who excel as agricultural entrepreneurs, employees or volunteers while gaining hands-on career experience. Agricultural Sales Entrepreneurship is one of 47 proficiency awards presented at the state level. Midwest Seed Genetics sponsored this award.

Newland’s Supervised Agricultural Experience program began when he started buying and reselling farm equipment in 2006. He started with small equipment and has worked his way up to larger equipment. He purchases his equipment at auctions in Missouri and Iowa.

Newland is a member of his high school band and a renaissance member. He is an active member of Crossing Church in Kirksville.

Newland is serving as Kirksville FFA Sentinel and is the human resource committee chair. In 2009 he was district fair division grand champion in agriculture mechanics. He is also active with the FFA trap team.

Newland plans to attend Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa after graduating high school. He wants to open a welding and equipment repair shop and some day open a new farm equipment dealership.

The Missouri FFA has 24,898 members representing 324 chapters. The national organization has more than 500,000 members representing 7,429 local chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands.

The FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.
