A celebration of diversity took place at the community college in Ottumwa on Friday.
OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Sixth Annual Diversity Conference took place on Friday at Indian Hills.
The conference is an opportunity for students, faculty, and members of the greater community to come together and appreciate the "Many Faces, One Vision."
We spoke with Norma Rosales who is the Coordinator for the conference. She said that there is a specific theme, as there has been in previous years.
"A violence theme, poverty, different themes throughout these last five years. This sixth year we decided...we're not dreamers, but we can always hope for better. And we decided that we would have Respect, Unity and Peace as the theme," Rosales said.
There were also keynote addresses from two speakers regarding diversity in Iowa, and living in a diverse community.
"They have different views. Mostly the speakers talk about ways that we can work towards having better communities. And how we can work together to go and meet that goal," Rosales said.
She added that an estimated 500 people took part in this year's event.
"We have exhibitors and we have vendors, and they are from different organizations. They bring their information so if people are not aware of organizations or services in the area, that's the way that they can find out," Rosales said.
Rosales said that she appreciates the community support for the diversity conference, and encouraged everyone to attend next year.
