DAVIS COUNTY, IOWA -- There is a price to pay for killing our Nation’s symbol.

With three additional bald eagles killed in Davis County, our Fact Finder Team looked into at the consequences of killing a Bald Eagle.

Fact Finder talked with Allen Crause of the Department of Natural Resources and he told Fact Finder perpetrators can be charged at both the state and national levels.

In Iowa, he said that it is a $195 fine and up to $1,000 in liquidated damages.

On the Federal level, he said the first offense is a misdemeanor, and the second offense is considered a felony. Then they can also impose fines for the killing.

Crause said they need the public’s help in this case.

“Just like any other shooting, hopefully we can run down a witness or get a hold of somebody that might have seen something and start following up on leads. Obviously, go out to the scene and see if there is any physical evidence you could collect,” Crause said.

If you have any information, there is a Turn-In-Poachers, or TIP, line that you can call.

Crause tells Fact Finder the reward is $3,500 for information that leads to an arrest in this case.

“There is the Turn-In-Poachers hotline they can call that they can remain anonymous and would make them eligible for this reward if they provide any information that would lead to an arrest,” Crause said.

Crause tells Fact Finder in his years with the DNR, he usually sees only one or two bald eagle killings a year.  This year has far exceeded that number.
