OTTUMWA, IOWA -- As spring arrives, many people struggle knowing what to plant and when.
KTVO talked with Earl May manager Jim Bremer to get answers.
Bremer said we are currently drier and warmer than last year, and a week or so ahead of the normal spring schedule.
He said it is important to pay attention to the 10 day forecast and overnight lows.
“Perennials won’t freeze, or if they do freeze they will come back again. You can plant perennials early and if the tops freeze a little bit they’ll come back. Annuals like petunias, marigolds, those kinds of things, geraniums. If they freeze, it will kill them,” Bremer said.
Bremer said you should keep an eye on soil temperatures, not air, and above 60 degrees is best.
If you have planted some annuals, he reccomends pulling them inside the house if the temperature goes below freezing at night.
