JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Nearly 2,000 Missouri residents could be denied mental health services under cuts approved by a Senate committee.
The Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday endorsed a 10 percent reduction in state aid for alcohol and drug abuse treatment, psychiatric care and crisis services for people with developmental disabilities. The cuts would not affect lower-income people on Medicaid.
State budget director Linda Luebbering says Gov. Jay Nixon supports. The governor's staff has been working with senators to try to close a $500 million shortfall in the nearly $23.9 billion budget he proposed earlier this year.
Senators also approved 10 percent cuts to a head injury treatment program and the Alternatives to Abortion program.
