DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- A University of Northern Iowa meteorology professor says an average of 48 tornados strike in Iowa each year, with the peak months in May and June.
This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa, sponsored by the National Weather Service and Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management. UNI professor Alan Czarnetzki suggests Iowans consider risks from lightning as well as tornados. The professor says this is a good time of year to review severe-weather safety rules.
Officials say the highlight of the week will be a statewide tornado drill on Wednesday. If there is severe weather on Wednesday the test will be moved to Thursday.
