CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (AP) -- Nearly 90,000 Iowa households behind on their heating bills could be disconnected.
Thursday is the day the state's winter utility shut-off moratorium expires. Iowans who qualify for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program are protected from disconnections for non-payment of bills each winter from Nov. 1 through April 1.
According to the Iowa Utilities Board, utility companies sent out nearly 90,000 disconnection notices in February
Customer bills more than 60 days past due totaled $35.8 million at the end of February. That's up 26 percent over the end of January.
Alliant Energy's Interstate Power and Light had over 27,000 customers at least 60 days late at the end of February. MidAmerican Energy didn't have up-to-date information.
