MACON, MO. -- With spring and summer just around the corner many property owners will be paving or constructing driveway entrances. MoDOT wants to remind property owners that they must obtain a permit before paving or constructing a driveway that enters onto a state highway. This permit is free, but is mandated by a state law that includes any construction done on state highway right of way.
Additionally, this time of year campaign signs such as and other various signs can become a common sight along state routes. MoDOT however, is required to remove these signs if they are placed on state right of way.
Advertising and commercial or political activities are not allowed on state property. This restriction is due to laws banning the use of state resources for private purposes. Signs and other objects placed on MoDOT right of way present obstacles for workers.
Signs may be placed on private property with the permission of the land owner. Sign owners will be contacted by MoDOT if their signs are encroaching on state right of way. If requested, the department can provide highway plans showing right of way limits.
