KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Winter may seem like a thing of the past but for some Heartland residents they’re still paying for the high heat costs from those cold winter months.
The Northeast Missouri Community Action Agency is offering help to those who may need financial assistance to pay their utility bills. You must act quickly because the Cold Weather Rule ends Wednesday March 31st. That means the Community Action Agencies will stop handing out applications. They can accept the completed applications until April 16th. It may take 30 days to find out if you qualify for help.
“We are currently getting low on funding so the sooner you get these notices in the sooner we would be able to help,” said Emergency Services Coordinator Mindy Garrett.
Garrett says they have a little less applicants this year than last but they've processed around 1300 total applications so far.
Assistance is provided by the Missouri Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP has two components including Energy Assistance (EA) and Energy Crisis Assistance Program (ECIP). EA is the component that ends Wednesday.
Those that qualify for assistance must meet income and family size guidelines.
To apply you can stop by any of the Community Action Agency offices in the five county (Adair, Clark, Knox, Schuyuler, Scotland) Northeast Missouri area or go online to the following site: Heat Help site.
