KIRKSVILLE, MO -- First Baptist Church in Kirksville is organizing a 5K race for the Saturday of Easter weekend.  The event will have a 5K race, 8 mile bike ride, 1.25 mile walk/run and a tot trot for the youngsters.  There will be awards for top finishers, race shirts, a bounce house for kids, a live band, concessions and even an egg hunt for children grades 5 and under.

Race organizer and youth director Charles Hunsaker said he created the event to help support the youth group.

“Well as I looked ahead for our youth program for the church I saw a need to have some extra money to support the youth program” said Hunsaker.  “Specifically on sending our youth to summer programs, camps, retreats, and those types of things.  We thought lets do a fundraising event, but let’s not just do an internal event, let’s go ahead and create a community wide event.”

Hunsaker said he was hoping to attain 50 participants.  So far, 80 racers are signed up to run on Saturday, April 3.

“I foresee us breaking 100” Hunsaker added, “for the first annual event, I couldn’t have been more pleased in the community.”
