DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Iowa Board of Regents has told the state's three public universities that they should come up with plans to eliminate or reduce use of general funds for their athletic departments.

Regent board members unanimously voted Wednesday to ask the presidents of the University of Iowa, University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State University to submit their plans in September.

The general fund contains about 52 percent taxpayer money and 48 percent from tuition, fees and other sources.

UI officials say they receive no general fund money but do get $882,000 after paying for athletic scholarships from the school general fund.

Iowa State officials say they have reduced fund dollars to $1.6 million this year from $3.4 million in 2004-2005. UNI received $4.6 million from general funds this year.
