JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Missouri Senate has given initial approval to a ban on a widely available and legal drug that users say mimics the effects of marijuana.

Tuesday's voice vote follows closely on the heels of the House, which approved a similar bill Monday.

The measure would ban synthetic compounds that are sprayed on dried herbs and flowers to give users a marijuana-like high. Possession of the compound would be a felony.

Both chambers rejected amendments that would have legalized medical marijuana in the state.

The Senate and House still must give final approval to their bills before they each would advance to the other chamber.
