JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Missouri regulators are considering a request for $320 million increase in electric rates from St. Louis-based AmerenUE.

It's the third request for a rate increase since 2007 from the state's biggest utility.

The Public Service Commission took opening statements Monday from Ameren and from those who would be affected by the higher rates.

AmerenUE president and CEO Warner Baxter says the company needs the extra revenue to pay for projects to improve reliability and to cover higher fuel costs.

Ameren initially sought a $400 million increase but has lowered that to $320 million.
