KIRKSVILLE, MO --

Truman State University is trying to beat the storm.

Two new outdoor warning sirens were installed on campus Wednesday. One is near Stokes Stadium and the other is north of the boiler plant.

Public safety officials say the sirens aren't just for weather emergencies.

“If we had a shooter on campus or something like that or a suspicious person that was causing some problems we could use that system to alert people to that kind of situation to help give more information to keep everybody safer,” said Tom Johnson, Public Safety Director.

The system has voice capabilities with four pre-recorded messages. Public safety can also send out their own messages through the sirens.

The project has been in the works for two years, and came with a price tag of $30,000.
