WASHINGTON, IOWA (AP) -- Court authorities in Washington County say a 70-year-old Washington man has entered a plea of not guilty in the death of his wife.

James Blum entered the written plea at his arraignment Friday. Blum also demanded a speedy trial, which means the case must proceed within 90 days. His trial is currently scheduled to begin May 11th.

Blum faces a charge of second degree murder for the early January death of his 67-year-old wife, Patricia. Investigators say Blum smothered his wife face down on a couch in their home and allegedly admitted to police he wanted to kill her because she had backed their car into a garage door.
