Report says more Iowa child abuse cases last year

DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- A new report says the number of child abuse investigations in Iowa rose last year after declining for two straight years.
   
Iowa Department of Human Services Director Charles Krogmeier says the number of such cases increased by about 11 percent above 2008 levels, which he finds a matter of concern.
   
The report released Wednesday says more Iowa parents were investigated last year over such things as broken bones, drownings and cases of neglect.
   
The report says physical abuse cases declined, and the number of sexual abuse cases was flat. Advocates say the biggest single issue is parents leaving children unsupervised.
