ALLISON, IOWA (AP) -- An Iowa jury considering the case of a man charged with killing a football coach has asked a judge what would happen if they found the suspect not guilty by reason of insanity.
The jury in the first-degree murder trial of 24-year-old Mark Becker met for seven hours Friday without reaching a verdict.
Becker has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the June 24 killing of Aplington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas.
After receiving a note with the jury's question, Iowa District Court Judge Stephen Carroll responded with a note to jurors, saying "you have nothing to do with the consequences" of the verdict.
Jurors have been deliberating the case since Wednesday. They will resume their work Monday at 10 a.m.
