KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- We all know that one inch of rain is different than one inch or snow. But what is the liquid equivalent of water in snow. We’ll test Kirksville Police Chief Jim Hughes in this segment of “Are you smarter than Meteorologist Ashley Smith?”
“I’d say 1” precipitation would equal, depending on the type of snow maybe upwards to 10, 8-12” of snowfall,” said Kirksville Police Chief Jim Hughes.
Chief Hughes is correct as far as his range goes. We typically say 1” of liquid is equal to 10” of snow. The temperature really has a lot to do with it. If it’s 10º outside we can expect a 15 to 1 ratio but if it’s 30º outside it would be a 10 to 1 ratio. Any meteorologist will tell you that meteorology is an imperfect science so many other factors would go into this as well.
