KIRKSVILLE, MO --

Fact Finder learns a proposed bill could make all Missouri schools put academics before athletics and activities.

New legislation would make a student who fails any class ineligible to participate in school sports and clubs.

All schools must follow the requirements set forth by the Missouri State High School Activities Association, which requires students to pass at least six classes per semester. In most cases, this means the student can fail one class and still participate.

Our Fact Finder team checked in with several local schools on their current policies.

Macon and Scotland County schools follow the state guidelines only.

Students in the Kirksville R-III schools have to pass at least six courses per quarter.

The Novinger schools have the strictest eligibility rules. If a student gets a failing grade at the end of a quarter, the student has to sit out until earning and maintaining a passing grade through the grading period.
