WATERLOO, IOWA (AP) -- Inmates from the Black Hawk County jail are hitting the streets in Waterloo to help the city repair potholes from this year's winter.
Inmates on Tuesday will follow behind city maintenance trucks, filling in the holes as part of a cooperative effort between the city and the sheriff's office. The venture is part of a new inmate worker program at the Black Hawk County jail.
Potholes are growing problem across Iowa. When it warms up during the day, the snow melts and the water seeps in cracks in the streets. At night, the water freezes and expands, creating potholes.
