SPRINGFIELD, MO. (AP) -- A 72-year-old woman has died in an early morning fire at her central Springfield home.

The victim has been identified as Carol Ann Martin. Fire Chief David Hall says the fire started early Sunday when Martin was
smoking in bed, and her mattress caught fire. Martin's daughter was able to escape after a smoke alarm awoke her.

Fire crews extinguished the flames quickly, but the blaze caused significant structural damage.
