KIRKSVILLE, MO -- Heartland residents braved the cold temperature for a good cause in the 5th annual Polar Plunge on Saturday.  The annual event helps to support the Special Olympics mission to provide year round sports to the more than 500 athletes in the Northeast Area.

This year, over 100 brave men and women from around the area took the plunge into the bitterly cold water of Forest Lake.  Participants were encouraged to dress in costumes as part of the competition for the “gold plunger.”  This year, the award went to the doctors in Speedos, part of the ATSU-KCOM team.  Thus far, over $10,000 has been raised towards the overall goal of $25,000 in 2010.
